As Singapore’s education system continues to evolve, a significant change called Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) is set to replace the traditional streaming system in all secondary schools by 2024. Background: Why did MOE introduce streaming in the first place?

By tailoring the curriculum to match students’ academic abilities, the dropout rate plummeted drastically over the years. Understanding Full SBB:

Introduced in phases since 202, this framework provides unparalleled flexibility. Students can opt to challenge themselves in certain subjects while selecting a less demanding level for others. Furthermore, they can adjust their subject levels as they progress through their secondary school years.

Eliminating the misconceptions:
Contrary to the streaming system, Full SBB does not define students’ identities, influence their learning experiences, or determine their access to post-secondary pathways. Instead, Full SBB embraces a more nuanced approach. As students move through secondary school, they have the opportunity to make adjustments to their subject levels based on their strengths, interests, and individual learning requirements. This approach ensures that every student receives an education tailored to their uniqueness, fostering a positive learning environment.

The role of Posting Groups:
Within Full SBB, students will be allocated to one of three Posting Groups based on their PSLE score ranges. It is essential to note that these Posting Groups facilitate entry into secondary schools and do not impact a student’s identity or academic journey. They merely assist in guiding students’ subject levels upon entering Secondary 1 and ensure diverse student profiles across schools. By leveraging the Posting Groups, secondary schools can maintain a wide range of student abilities and prevent stratification based solely on PSLE performance.

Implementation of Full SBB:
Understandably, you might question whether all secondary schools will embrace Full SBB. The answer is yes! Full SBB will be implemented across all schools that currently employ the streaming system. However, specialized schools, such as those offering the Integrated Programme or schools with specific programs like Crest Secondary School and Spectra Secondary School, will not adopt Full SBB due to their unique educational focus.
