Ayam Goreng
Here’s a kid-friendly recipe for Ayam Goreng (Indonesian Fried Chicken) that’s simple and delicious. This version is less spicy and perfect for kids.
Ingredients:
– 4 pieces of chicken drumsticks or thighs (skinless if preferred)
– 1 cup of buttermilk (or milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar added)
– 1 teaspoon garlic powder
– 1 teaspoon onion powder
– 1 teaspoon paprika (mild)
– 1 teaspoon salt
– ½ teaspoon black pepper
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)
Instructions:
1. Marinate the Chicken:
– In a bowl, combine the buttermilk, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
– Add the chicken pieces to the marinade, making sure they are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for more flavor).
2. Prepare for Frying:
– In a shallow dish, place the flour. You can add a pinch of salt and pepper to the flour for extra flavor if you like.
– Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat (about 1/2 inch deep).
3. Coat the Chicken:
– Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing the excess to drip off.
– Dredge each piece of chicken in the flour, making sure it’s fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.
4. Fry the Chicken:
– Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the hot oil. Fry in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
– Cook for about 10-12 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F or 75°C).
5. Drain and Serve:
– Once cooked, transfer the chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
– Let it cool slightly before serving.
6. Enjoy:
– Serve the Ayam Goreng with rice, vegetables, or a simple salad. Kids can enjoy it with their favorite dipping sauce!
Tips:
– You can adjust the spices according to your child’s taste preferences.
– For a healthier option, you can bake the chicken instead of frying. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the coated chicken on a greased baking sheet for about 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through.
Enjoy your cooking!
