Concerned Mother: Son Might Be Hanging Out With Bad Influences In Secondary School

Dear Agony Aunt,

I am writing to you because I am deeply concerned about my son who is currently studying in a lower ranked secondary school. He used to attend a very good primary school, but unfortunately, he did not perform well for his PSLE and ended up in a school that is not as academically prestigious.

Since he started at this new school, I have noticed a significant change in his behavior. He has started speaking in strange lingos and seems to be adopting a different attitude towards his studies and life in general. I am worried that he might be influenced by the wrong crowd and that this could have a negative impact on his future.

I feel lost and unsure of how to help him navigate this challenging period in his life.

Sincerely,
Concerned Mother

Dear Concerned Mother,

I understand your worries about your son’s well-being and the changes you have observed in his behavior since starting at a new school. It is natural to feel concerned about the potential influences that a new environment can have on a young person, especially during the formative years of secondary school.

First and foremost, it is important to have an open and honest conversation with your son. Express your concerns in a non-judgmental manner and let him know that you are there to support him. Understanding the reasons behind his change in behavior can provide valuable insight into his experiences at the new school.

Additionally, consider reaching out to his teachers or school counselors to gain a better understanding of his academic and social experiences at the new school. They may be able to provide valuable insights and support to help your son adjust and thrive in his new environment.

Encouraging your son to engage in positive extracurricular activities or hobbies can also help him find a sense of belonging and purpose outside of the school environment. Whether it’s sports, arts, or community service, finding a passion can provide a positive outlet for his energy and help him connect with like-minded peers.

Lastly, continue to provide a supportive and nurturing home environment. Let your son know that he can always come to you with any concerns or challenges he may be facing. Building a strong foundation of trust and communication can help him navigate the complexities of adolescence.

Remember, every child’s journey through secondary school is unique, and while challenges may arise, they can also be opportunities for growth and resilience. Your love and support as a mother will undoubtedly make a positive impact on your son’s life.

Best wishes,
Agony Aunt
