How are Posting Groups in Full Subject-based Banding (Full SBB) different from the N(T), N(A) and Express streams? Is it just a renaming or rebranding of the existing system?
In recent years, the Singapore education system has witnessed a significant shift in the way students are admitted into secondary schools and guided in selecting their initial subject levels. The introduction of Posting Groups under the Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB) represents a departure from the traditional stream-based system, signaling a move towards greater flexibility and customization.
Unlike the existing system, which emphasizes academic streams such as N(T), N(A), and Express, Posting Groups are specifically designed for the admission of students into secondary schools and to guide the initial subject levels offered at the beginning of Secondary One. Once enrolled, students will be placed into mixed form classes comprising of peers from various Posting Groups. Approximately one-third of their curriculum time will be dedicated to taking a set of Common Curriculum subjects together, including Art, Character and Citizenship Education (CCE), Design and Technology (D&T), Food and Consumer Education (FCE), Music, and Physical Education (PE).
Full SBB provides eligible students with increased flexibility in choosing subjects at different levels based on their specific strengths and learning needs. This affords them broader access to subject offerings and programmes, thereby fostering a more individualized approach to education. It is important to note that while Posting Groups map to the PSLE Score ranges of the existing N(T), N(A), and Express streams, they do not confine or dictate students’ secondary and post-secondary experiences and pathways, unlike the traditional academic streams.
The implementation of three distinct Posting Groups aims to ensure that schools maintain inclusivity and continue to have a diverse mix of students with varied learning profiles. Additionally, it provides students with opportunities to engage with peers from different backgrounds and interests, enriching their educational experience.
By embracing the concept of Posting Groups, the education system endeavors to create a more personalized and inclusive learning environment, empowering students to pursue their academic journey according to their unique strengths and aspirations. This transition marks an important step towards a more dynamic and student-centric approach to secondary education.
