Nasi Goreng
Here’s a kid-friendly recipe for Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Fried Rice) that’s simple and delicious. This version uses mild flavors and colorful vegetables to make it appealing to kids.
Ingredients:
– 2 cups cooked rice (preferably day-old rice)
– 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
– 1 small onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 small carrot, diced
– 1/2 cup frozen peas
– 1 egg (optional)
– 2 tablespoons soy sauce (low-sodium if preferred)
– 1 tablespoon ketchup (for sweetness)
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Optional toppings: sliced cucumber, tomato, or fried egg
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Rice: If you don’t have day-old rice, cook the rice according to package instructions and let it cool completely. This helps prevent it from becoming mushy.
2. Cook the Vegetables: Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan or wok over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until they are soft and fragrant (about 2-3 minutes).
3. Add the Carrots and Peas: Stir in the diced carrot and frozen peas. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
4. Scramble the Egg (Optional): If using an egg, push the vegetables to one side of the pan. Crack the egg into the pan and scramble it until fully cooked. Then mix it with the vegetables.
5. Add the Rice: Add the cooked rice to the pan. Use a spatula to break up any clumps and mix it with the vegetables.
6. Season the Rice: Pour in the soy sauce and ketchup. Stir everything together until the rice is evenly coated and heated through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve the Nasi Goreng warm. You can top it with sliced cucumber, tomato, or a fried egg if desired.
Tips:
– Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or corn based on your child’s preferences.
– You can also add some cooked chicken or shrimp for extra protein if desired.
Enjoy your delicious and colorful Nasi Goreng!
