Tahu Gejrot

Here’s a kid-friendly recipe for Tahu Gejrot, a delicious Indonesian dish featuring fried tofu in a tasty chili soy sauce. This version will be made mild and simple for kids to enjoy!

Ingredients:

For the Fried Tofu:
– 1 block of firm tofu
– Oil for frying

For the Sauce:
– 3 tablespoons soy sauce (you can use low-sodium)
– 1 tablespoon sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
– 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional for a tangy flavor)
– 1 teaspoon sugar (adjust to taste)
– 1-2 teaspoons of chili sauce (or less for mild flavor)
– 1 clove garlic, minced
– 1 small cucumber, diced (for garnish)
– 1-2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu
1. Drain and Cut: Remove the tofu from its package and drain any excess water. Pat it dry with a paper towel. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes.
2. Fry the Tofu: In a pan, heat oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the tofu cubes. Fry them until they are golden brown on all sides (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from the pan and let them drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil.

Step 2: Make the Sauce
3. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, chili sauce, and minced garlic. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved. Adjust the chili sauce according to your kids’ spice tolerance.

Step 3: Assemble the Dish
4. Serve: In a serving dish, place the fried tofu cubes. Pour the sauce over the tofu.
5. Garnish: Top with diced cucumber and sliced green onions for a fresh crunch.

Step 4: Enjoy!
6. Eat: Let the kids dig in with a fork or chopsticks! This dish can be enjoyed on its own or served with steamed rice.

Tips:
– Adjusting Spices: Feel free to reduce or eliminate the chili sauce if your kids prefer a milder flavor. You can also let them help mix the sauce!
– Add Veggies: You can add other veggies like bell peppers or carrots if your kids enjoy them.

Enjoy making this fun and tasty Tahu Gejrot with your little ones!
