Concerned Mother: Husband and I were winning athletes but son turned out to be so lazy
Dear Agony Aunt,
I hope you can help us with some advice about our son. My husband and I used to be very active and successful athletes when we were younger. We won numerous sports awards and enjoyed an active and healthy lifestyle. Our concern now is with our 14-year-old son, who seems to lack any interest in physical activity or sports.
Instead of being outdoors and participating in sports, he spends most of his time lying in bed and playing video games. We’ve tried to encourage and motivate him, but it’s been challenging to get him to engage in any physical activities or even spend time outside. We are worried about his health, well-being, and future, especially as he is studying in secondary school.
We are at a loss about what to do and how to help him develop a more active lifestyle. Any advice or suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Concerned Mother
Dear Concerned Mother,
I understand your worries about your son’s lack of interest in physical activity, particularly given your own athletic background. It’s natural to want the best for our children, and seeing them adopt unhealthy habits can be very concerning.
First and foremost, it’s important to approach this issue with empathy and understanding. Teenagers often go through phases of disinterest in activities that were once important to their parents. Instead of pushing him to engage in specific activities, try having open and non-judgmental conversations with him about his interests and what he enjoys doing. This can help you understand the underlying reasons for his behavior and build a better connection with him.
It might also be beneficial to explore alternative forms of physical activity that he might find enjoyable. This could involve trying out different sports, joining a local youth group or club, or even engaging in physical activities as a family. By making the experience more about fun and exploration rather than pressure, he might be more open to participating.
Additionally, it’s important to set a good example by incorporating physical activity into your family life. When children see their parents leading an active lifestyle, they are more likely to follow suit.
Remember that change takes time, and patience is key. Keep the lines of communication open and continue to provide support and encouragement. With time and understanding, your son may find his own path to a more active and healthy lifestyle.
Best of luck,
Agony Aunt
