Here’s a nutritious and kid-friendly croque madame recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of whole wheat bread
  • 8 slices of ham
  • 1 cup of grated cheese (cheddar or Gruyere)
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet and top each with a slice of ham and a sprinkle of grated cheese.
  3. Place the remaining 4 slices of bread on top to make sandwiches.
  4. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk to make a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture thickens to make a béchamel sauce. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Pour the béchamel sauce over the sandwiches, making sure to cover them completely.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top of the sandwiches.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. While the sandwiches are baking, fry the eggs to your desired doneness in a separate pan.
  10. Once the sandwiches are done, remove them from the oven and place a fried egg on top of each sandwich.
  11. Serve the croque madame sandwiches hot and enjoy!
