Worried Mother: Daughter wants to play with classmates after school, doesn’t want to come home

Dear Agony Aunt,

I am writing to seek your advice regarding my daughter who is studying in primary school. Recently, she has been asking me to pick her up from school later than usual so that she can play with her friends. I am concerned that allowing her to play after school will affect her studies. Don’t children already have enough time to play with each other during recess?

Should I be worried about her academic performance if she spends more time playing with her friends?

Thank you for your guidance.

Sincerely,
Worried Mother

Dear Worried Mother,

Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about your daughter’s request to play with her friends after school. It is natural for children to want to socialize and play with their peers, as it is an important part of their social and emotional development.

While it is understandable that you want to ensure your daughter’s academic success, it is also essential to allow her to have a balance between school work and playtime. Playing with friends can help children develop important social skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

If your daughter’s academic performance is not being negatively impacted by her extra playtime, it may be beneficial for her overall well-being. However, if you notice a decline in her grades or if she is struggling to keep up with her schoolwork, it might be time to reassess her schedule.

Communication is key, so I recommend having an open and honest conversation with your daughter about the importance of balancing school responsibilities with playtime. Encourage her to prioritize her studies while still allowing her to enjoy quality time with her friends.

Remember, every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Trust your instincts as a parent and continue to support your daughter in finding a healthy balance between school and play.

Best of luck,

Agony Aunt
